Politics works best when people can trust those in power. But currently, politicians can deliberately mislead the public without consequence — while civil servants can be held criminally accountable. This creates a two-tier system of accountability that undermines trust in our democracy.
We've taken action. Luke Meyer MP has tabled Amendments 13–18 to the Public Accountability (Hillsborough) Bill to close this gap, making it a criminal offence for politicians and parliamentary candidates to deliberately mislead the public in the most serious cases.

Why this matters
Unchecked political deception weakens democracy. Honest politicians are undermined when others mislead the public, and voter trust in Parliament falls. These amendments:
- Close the accountability gap between politicians and other public office holders
- Protect politicians acting in good faith
- Maintain robust safeguards to ensure only serious and deliberate misconduct is covered
- Preserve free speech, political debate, and parliamentary privilege

- 9 in 10 UK adults support criminal sanctions for deliberate political deception (Survation, 2025)
- Over 200,000 people signed petitions calling for this reform
